Milhaud was born in Aix-en-Provence on September 4, 1892. As a child he improvised melodies at the piano and soon took up the violin. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1909, studying the violin with Berthelier, ensemble with Lefèvre, harmony with Leroux, counterpoint with André Gédalge, composition and fugue with Charles-Marie Widor, and conducting with Vincent d'Indy. David Van Kriedt (1922-1994) was a jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He studied under Darius Milhaud at Mills College in the 1940s, where he became a member of the Dave Brubeck Octet. This short-lived group included several players who would become well-known jazz musicians, including Dave Brubeck (piano), Paul Desmond (alto saxophone), Bill Smith (clarinet), Cal Tjader (drums), and Van Kriedt (tenor saxophone).
